"Red, White and Boom".
They set off fireworks from a barge on the Mississippi so that both sides of the Quad Cities can enjoy it.
I live on the Illinois side but I work on the Iowa side of the river in Davenport, Iowa.
Due to the flooding they decided to set the fireworks off of the Centennial Bridge
but were unable to get permission from the D.O.T.
So it was cancelled.
There were still many celebrations around the various towns,
to say nothing off all the illegal fireworks going off in the neighborhoods.
I stayed home with my stressed out dogs but I saw a few from my living room window.
it's only 2 minutes and it focuses on downtown and the ballpark.
Under some of that water is the road that I usually drive on to get to work.
Yep, I've had to find a new route for the time being.
The last I've heard was that the river was 20 feet over flood stage.
But luckily it's been going down about a foot a day.

and here we sit drying up on the bone. it's never just normal is it?
i always stayed home with my furries too. zeke could sleep right through thunderstorms...
but man~made booms and he was petrified.

I'M not going through that.
For me it's just a minor inconvenience as I try to get to and from work.
I live in Illinois in Rock Island and we built a flood wall.
There's much debate about flood walls. Davenport didn't want to ruin the river view so almost every single year this happens to some degree.
My town has the Mississippi on one side and then another side is the Rock River which floods too, of course.
When I was a very little girl I remember my parents driving down to Sunset Marina and the roads were covered with water. I was terrified. Years ago when I was looking to buy my house, I only looked at houses up on the hill and that's where my home is.
The only floods around my home are when it rains fast and hard and the sewer system can't handle it and the streets flood and the water creeps over my sidewalk. But once the rains stop, all the water is gone.
I don't want to be insensitive to the people who live along the river, but they are usually prepared for it and their houses are built up on supports and they have boats to get to dry lands.
Yep, just a fact of life if you live here.
(Blue was the only one that could not care less about the fireworks but that's because he couldn't hear them! LOL!)

That's a lot of water. Floods can be so devastating when they damage property. The cost to restore and replace can be immense. Especially if there's no house insurance.
And, I always worry for pets, livestock and wild animals that are trapped.
I'm a bit of a Debbie Downer, and have to say I dislike fireworks. Not just due to the excessive costs involved.
Here at New Years and on Australia Day, not only are there "official" explosions, but local parks and some backyards (illegally) light up as well.
We've taken in lost and scared dogs who've fled their properties and are in danger of being hit by cars. Finding their owners can be a nightmare.
And, animal shelters are deluged with dogs after fireworks. As if thunderstorms aren't bad enough.

The 4th of July is definitely my cats least favorite holiday. Mine is New Years.
Their favorite is Thanksgiving (for the turkey). Mine too (for the four days off).

I agree, floods can be so devastating. Especially when they catch people by surprise.
Because we have yearly flooding, everyone that lives in the flood plain is required to have flood insurance. Also, every year the city gets busy filling sandbags and they call for volunteers to keep the water at bay. I must say that they do have it pretty organized most times and are well prepared. One year when the flood was very severe, local shelters opened their doors and had emergency plans in place to house the pets of people who were flooded out. I remember that we even took some in at our boarding kennel.
And about fireworks, well, I've never been much of a fan either.
Too many people get hurt and so many tragedies with pets running off.
It's certainly not a favorite holiday!

My pets least favorite holiday is probably Thanksgiving...because I am always gone all day and then I come home cranky because I always work the day after. My least favorite probably is...4th of July because everyone always seemed to be having big family celebrations and I feel like the mean old lady on the block cursing their fun and fireworks.
My pets favorite holiday is probably Christmas because the people in my life usually buy them gifts and treats.
My favorite holiday is Halloween because I look forward to out-tricking my sister. :)

I've always wondered why a view is moree important tha to actually stopp the flooding and get less destruction?
I've always wondered why people need to build their homes by the beaches and refuse to build any kind of protection against flooding? and I have always wondered why they then complain every year when this happens :-) :-) :-)
They know it will happen every year! and when the flooding comes they usually complain about authorities that should have prevented the flooding from the beginning, something impossible to do unless the property owners refuse to do anything themselves.
Looks sort of beautiful though with just water and no roads :-)

July 4th we sat here with Opie (mini dachshund part of our family
'sandwich') shaking mad and barking. I wonder what the deer, racoons,
etc out here think of all the loud noise? The good thing about July 4 is

Those of us on the Illinois side agree with you.
Downtown they built a flood wall and they also built a nice park next to it. So we don't have the flooding that Iowa does.
Kinda hard to understand why they didn't do the same!
The aerial view does make it look kinda cool but up close it looks like icky muddy water. The Mississippi has so much gross stuff in it, I can't believe I used to go boating and actually got into that water...but then again I did a lot of stuff when I was young that I can't believe I did now! LOL!

Yep, every year to some degree, there is flooding.
I can take the Interstate and just drive around and over it if need be.
My Chihuahua and my Border Collie were really frightened,and one of the cats. The rest of them didn't like the fireworks but tolerated it.
I wonder what the wildlife thought too.

Truthfully, I don't care that much about the flood. No one has been reported getting hurt because of it or worse and around here it's something that happens every Spring and if it doesn't happen in the Spring, then it probably will flood in the Summer.
and the Fourth is just plain annoying to me now but sadly some people did get hurt from fireworks.

I'm glad you're not seriously affected by the flooding. And I agree with you about noisy fireworks. I hate loud noises. I even wear industrial ear protectors when I go to a movie!
We actually watched the fireworks in Santa Fe from our land. No noise, and they weren't very big, because we were about 40 miles away. Andy and I had an hour drive home afterwards (Kaitlin and Torben and the pups were staying up on the land), and we'll probably skip them next year even if the night is clear. Kaitlin and Torben thought it was neat, though.

Now some of the streets are opening up again as the flood recedes but then last night we had severe storms so they might be blocked off again.
I'm with you, fireworks just fail to impress me anymore.
